Associate Coach Matt Smith
In addition to being the associate coach for the Arsenal 92 Premier girls team for the Gilbert Soccer Club;
Matt is the Head Girls coach at Corona del Sol, the two time defending state champions. Matt was the Arizona Republic’s Big School Coach of the Year in 2006-2007 and the NSCAA Arizona Big School Coach of the Year in 2005-2006. Matt is the all time wins leader at Corona del Sol and a 4 time region coach of the year. Matt's Corona teams have advanced to the quarterfinals in all seven years and taken 3 trips to the semifinals and two trips to the state finals. Prior to coming to Corona, Matt was an assistant at Dobson High School, advancing to the state finals once and semifinals twice in three years. Matt's collegiate coaching experience includes a place in the NCAA record books as he was part of a coaching staff that completed one of the top 20 turnarounds in NCAA Division I history. He has also coached at the NJCAA level, serving 4 years as the head women's coach at South Mountain Community College (all time wins leader), and another 4 years as an assistant at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. During this time another 4 years as an assistant at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. During his time at CGCC, both the men's and women's teams have achieved national rankings (as high as #3) and the women won a conference championship.
Matt's club coaching experience includes two state championships (U-18 and U-19 girls) and 4 Region IV Far West Regional appearances. In addition, he has coached 7 different teams to the state finals. He has coached for 6 years in the Gilbert Soccer Club. His playing experience includes two state cup finals as a club player, playing for the Arizona National (CISCO) Syndicate, the first Arizona boys team to advance to nationals, a nomination for Junior College All-American and playing at MacMurray College for National Staff Coach Bill Killen.
Matt received his Juris Doctorfrom Arizona State University's Sandra Day O'Conner College of Law in 1998. Heteaches in the Law Magnet Program at South Mountain High School. Matt livesin Gilbert with his wife Patti, a coach and photographer and his son Kaden, whoparticipates in the club's little strikers program
