My Site News: Flames beat Cyclones in Wind Tunnel (2-1)

Flames beat Cyclones in Wind Tunnel (2-1)
The Flames played the Swansboro Cyclones on a gusty, windy day that wreaked havoc on ball control for both teams. The tempo of the game was controlled by the Flames making 40+ shots on goal. Whether it was fate, bad luck, strong cross winds, crooked feet or all of the above the Flames could only find the net twice. Strong team play was clearly evident and the Flames won definitively 2-1.

The Flames started crisply moving the ball immediately down the field with one touch passes. The Flames forwards challenged the Cyclone defenders with Callan driving deep on a pass by Alana. In flurry of kicks and ricochets a quality shot could not be found and the Cyclones cleared. Another wave of Flames went into action down deep with Christina, Pilo, Callan and Alana popping shots keeping the Cyclone goalie engaged. With the Cyclones unable to clear past mid-field Pilo broke loose on a 1 on 1 with the shot going wide. Flames defenders(Erin, Ally, Price and Lauren) readily took back control and delivered pinpoint passes to midfielders who spread out the field. Pilo repeated her 1 on 1 again but his time the wind pushed the ball wide. Offense continued to launch barrages of shots at the Cyclones that defied basic laws of physics to avoid going in the net. Finally, Alana punched in a shot to the far corner putting the Flames in the lead 1-0.

Following the tip off, Brenae found herself in yet another break away situation and charged to the goal launching a shot that was picked up by the wind and whisked right to the goalie. The Cyclones regained their composure but still had difficulty passing mid-field and never mounted a serious threat. Countering, Eli and Callan strode deep before Eli was "mugged". On the ensuing PK, Christina popped a shot off a weird bounce and just missed the goal wide left. Moments later, Christina went solo end to end with the shot defended by the Cyclones goalie. The half ended with the Flames up 1-0.

The Cyclones opened with possession but was quickly intercepted and passed to Callan streaking to the net. Squirrelly winds prevented her from getting a solid shot off. A motivated Cyclone team responded with an assault on goal but was denied. The Flames drove deep with Christina serving Callan only to be broken up and returned deep into Flames territory. The Cyclones crashed through the defense and knocked in a quality shot to tie at 1-1.

With the wind howling, tempo was difficult to find for both teams. The Flames stepped up their game fighting through the invisible opponent(wind) and the Cyclones. After 8 minutes of sustained pressure and shooting, Callan finished a shot into the net to go up 2-1. With all the offensive shooting, Collins had more touches with her feet dishing the ball up field on kick back passes. Many quality shots were exhibited, by Alana, Eli, Cuccaro, Jules, Aynsley, Anna and others. None could find the net. The game was kept interesting by surprising calls and non-calls by the referees. With the game winding down, the Flames put on a clinic of passing and shooting. Time ran out but a victory was achieved.
