My Site News: Ailing Flames succumb to Premier 3-0

Ailing Flames succumb to Premier 3-0
The Flames faced adversity on many fronts in the contest against CASL Premier. The girls came together and played terrifically despite missing and sick players. Consequently, the Flames found themselves playing a defensive game most of the game. The game was played cleanly and was much tighter than the final score reflected, with the Flames losing 3-0.

In the first half, several players were challenged to fill positions that were new to them. The entire team rose to the occasion and put up a stifling wall of defense. Premier had great difficulty getting close to the goalie box. Clearing was a chore but Brenae had two quality break-aways that resulted in near scores. Aynsley also drove deep keeping Premier honest. Near the end of the period, Premier kept the pressure on and found a seam down the left side deep into the box. The ball was crisply crossed to a sliding Premier forward who punched it in. The Flames went to halftime down 1-0.

The Flames opened with a staunch and sustained defensive stand. Defenders Erin, Ally and Eli worked like a well oiled machine. All players successfully withstood 1 on 1 challenges providing tense moments in stop or score challenges. In a Flames offensive rally, the Premier goalie was drawn out of the goal while Lauren popped a shot that was barely stopped as the goalie raced back. Scrappy defensive play by the Flames midfielders (Pilo, Jules and Cuccaro) and stopper Christina kept Premier off balance. Premier assembled layers of attack but could not penetrate into a threatening zone. In response, Cuccaro and Aynsley put together an exchange clearing into Premier goal box but could not get a shot off.

On a Flames goal kick Premier intercepted a pass and crashed to the net. In heavy traffic, Collins made several blocks but persistent Premier forwards eventually prevailed with a goal. Despite being down 2-0 the game had the feel that it was still within reach. Eli was put up top and added additional offensive fuel. A new drive started with Pilo to Brenae to Eli who took a shoot that went just wide right. Britny and Brenae stayed up top and delivered deep kicks to the goalie. With time winding down the Flames pulled everyone up top hoping for a goal or two. In a defensive breakdown, Premier broke through and scored a final goal with 1 minute left.

Next up are the Greensboro Twisters at Greensboro.
