My Site News: Flames defeat scrappy TFC squad 1-0

Flames defeat scrappy TFC squad 1-0
TFC won the kickoff and wasted no time driving down to the Flames net.  In a wide open, physical game, goalie Rachel, easily stopped a soaring kick with the sun in her eyes.  The Flames countered with a charge down the field.  Brenae agressively secured and forwarded balls down field.  With a flurry of activity, Jules punched in a left footed kick to the far post to go up 1 to nil.  Britny and Christina were credited with the assist.

TFC responded with relentless pressure deep in the Flames backfield.  In a series of end to end volleys, the Flames had multiple break aways led by both Emilys', Ashley and Britny.  Midfield was consistent with strong efforts by Pilo and Eli but possession proved elusive.  Steady defensive efforts by Price, Erin, Ally and Lauren kept the TFC offensive team at bay. A late surge by Eli and Anna threatened again but the Flames could not convert.

The half ended with a spectacular save by Rachel on a finger tip save, knocking the ball over the top of the goal post.  Despite a spray of shots by TFC, the Flames finished the half leading 1-0.

Play started with both teams going deep and exchanging shots on goal.  Eli served a duet of corner kicks but a solid kick to goal could not be made.  TFC came out motivated with a constant barrage of shots on goal.  In perfectly anticipated reads, Rachel denied several close range shots.  She was tested 14 times in the second half.  Erin helped stave off several break aways with Ally providing back up.

Unfortunately, most of the second half was spent in the Flames backfield.    The Flames rallied back with sporadic charges but could not retain possession for a sustained period.  TFC continued to attack but a solid defensive effort led by Price, Lauren and Erin thwarted the effort.  The Flames midfield necessarily assisted on the defense more than desired.

The Flames prevailed to win 1-0 against an athletic and physical TFC team.  A fitting ending for a beautiful day in North Carolina.
