Fall 2008 Team Prepares to Take to the field

We're a little different than last year, as is very typical of young ladies soccer teams as they advance thru the high school years.   But, the girls are eager and the schedule is going to be challenging.  Are we ready?  You bet!

Tournaments will take us to Atlanta and Washington.   League play will again take us all over the state as we test our improving skills against the best the region has to offer.

Watch for more news as work to replace Larry, our wonderful dad that got this site moving way back in 2004, but is finally moving on himself.  Thanks, Larry.

 Go Flames!!!

Girls from Quay make Statement to CASL Elite

The U16 Girls from the Quay made a statement when they played CASL Elite in the first round of the 2007 State Cup. After a crushing defeat in the first game against TFC Navy, the Flames dug deep and played superbly. In the closing 2 games of regular season and the match against TFC the Flames struggled to find their offense. About mid-way through the first period against Elite things came together. Jules found Alana down the side deep in CASL territory and launched a cross to Eli who headed the ball in. Wow, Flames go up 1-nil. Play through the end of the period was physical but evenly matched.

The second half found the Flames playing mostly defense as CASL through everything they had at the Flames. Kate was tested relentlessly with corner kick after corner kick. With approximately 10 minutes left, Elite finally broke through with a header off of a corner kick. The game wound down and the Flames earned a very respectable 1 - 1 tie, against one of the top teams in the state. Way to go Ladies!

Columbus Day Tourney - 3rd Place Finish

The Flames participated in the Columbus Day Tournament in Virginia Beach and recorded 2 victories and a loss for a 3rd place finish overall in the Premier bracket. The competition was very balanced across all teams with fast paced and physical play. The Flames encountered a relentless, and skilled and eventual champion Burlington team in the semi-final loss.

Match 1 - Richmond Mystx

The first match was against a physical Richmond team coupled with a center referee who was consistently whistle challenged. The Flames kept to their game and dominated play in the first half. Jesse opened the attack on a pass from Shannon, with a streak down the side and drew a foul resulting in Julie launching a nice free kick keeping Richmond on their heels right from the start. Mel, Lexi and Jesse had great field chemistry with lots of give and goes. Kimberly and Alana were a wall banging around in midfield distributing the ball to Jules and Eli. The Flames defense centered by Price and Christina with Lauren and Julie on the wings played as one and were determined to keep Kate out of the game. At 29:53 in Lexi served up a corner kick that ricocheted right back to her for a re-serve to Jules and then knocked in by Eli on the header. Aubrey and Cuccaro joined the fray in the midfield to disrupt attacks and keep the pressure on Richmond as the half closed with the Flames having advantage 1-0.

The second half found the Flames with an initial deep drive started by Collins finding Jules in the corner for another nice cross. Richmond fought back hard with waves of attacks that were physically diffused by Christina and Price. Mel and Alana provided multiple intercepts in the midfield but the Flames really struggled to put together any offensive momentum and found themselves playing a lot of defense. Outside defenders, Julie, Lauren and Erin were tested again and again. Fortunately, Richmond could not put any of their corner kicks in-bounds. The Flames had moments of inspiration with Pilo distributing the ball to Shannon and Cuccaro and Mel but quality looks were elusive. Kate was tested a few times but did not yield, securing a victory of 1-0.

Match 2 - Phoenix Sport Tigers

The game got off to a tentative start by both teams. Mel finally got a drive started on a deep angle pass to Jesse who quickly dished it off to Shannon and then on to Eli. As Eli picked her way through traffic she passed to Kimberly in a crowd, taking a shot. Shannon's crashing the net, left her with a soft tap in for the first and only goal of the entire match. A close battle ensued for much of the first half with tough midfield scrums by Aubrey, Alana, Kimberly and Cuccaro. The Flames had waves of breakaways with Lexi, Pilo and Mel but timing was just off and a solid shot could not be found. Price and Lauren were frequent contributors starting the long drives. Jules cracked a power shot on net that went just high on the far post as the half concluded with the Flames up 1-0.

The second half opened with the Sun beaming and humidity rising. Once again the Flames defensive backs kept the ball away from Kate. She did get an occasional roll through ball but always cleared it past midfield. Lauren and Kimberly had several give and go exchanges with feeds to Erin and Lexi but offense formation was lacking. Most of the second half was fought by the midfielders with Alana doing most of the inside banging. Phoenix put together a couple of drives late in the period but never got a quality look thanks to the hustle of Julie and Lauren. As the period wore down, Eli started a drive with tic-tac-toe passes down the field to Lexi and Jesse. Shots were taken and Shannon's hustle nearly beat the goalie to the ball several times. Flames win 1-0 and advance to semi-finals.

Match 3 - Burlington Cardinals

Pinpoint one touch passes by the Flames started immediately and kept the Burlington defenders under pressure for the first 12 minutes of play. Solid shots on goal were absent but the goalie had her hands full in traffic much of that time. Burlington did not cross midfield until half way through the period. They also had a speedster threat that Julie kept closely marked and effectively never allowed her to mount a scoring threat. Price and Christina pinched up and started several drives with great one touch passes between Mel, Shannon and Jesse earning 2 consecutive corner kicks by Lexi. The serves were well executed and defended by both teams respectively. The Flames dominated but could not find the net. The half concluded 0-0.

Burlington came out a different team and caught the Flames off guard. The one touch accuracy and first to ball hustle exhibited by the Flames in the first half disappeared. On their heels, a defensive communication breakdown cost the Flames a goal at 13:20 in. Burlington kept the pressure on but could not get any offense deep offensive surges started. Defense was put to the test time after time but did not buckle. The Flames did muster several late drives deep but could not put any shots on goal. Erin had a couple of deep corner dribbles but found herself double teamed as did most other Flames attackers. Ouch, Burlington wanted the win more than the Flames and got it winning 1-0.

Flames extinguish CASL Premier

The Flames opened the tip off with a drive deep into CASL territory with a pass from Shannon finding a seam to Eli who took a shot on goal to set the tone of play. On a steamy Saturday morning, in sleepy Fuquay Varina, the Flames came to play. It had been over a year since these two teams last played and this match up was much anticipated, especially by the girls who share friendships outside of soccer. The level of play was skilled and fast paced but the Flames came out the victor winning 2-0.

Much of the first period was a battle of mid-fields with each team developing break away opportunities. Kimberly and Alana anchored center mid and frustrated the CASL attackers.  Julie and Lauren were frequently found pinching up as defenders, deftly intercepting CASL passes.  The Flames displayed multiple possesion drives with tic-tac-toe passes from Melanie to Shannon to Eli and Kimberly finishing with shots on goal. At 12 minutes in, the Flames were pouring on the pressure and peppering the CASL goalie with shots.  CASL was not able to cross mid-field as a result of Price and Christina stepping into the attack. Then at the 16th minute Lexi broke loose on a pass from Cuccaro punching in the first goal of the season and game for the Flames to go up 1-0. CASL rallied with several drives but never seriously testing Kate.  Lauren had some great steps that shutdown play development to keep the Flames on the offensive. At the 36th minute Pilo found Jules to feed Shannon for the second score to go up 2-nil.  Outside mid-fielders Aubrey and Erin played scrappy against an increasingly physical CASL attack and did not yield.  As the half wound down the Flames earned a free kick with Alana lofting a floater to be headed just over the top post by Eli.

With the humidity soaring, the second half got underway with the Flames offense getting assistance by defenders Price and Christina. Despite the heat, the tempo of the game was up a notch from the first half. CASL opened with several drives but the defense was up to the task and most importantly so was Kate, as she was tested frequently.  Midway through the period CASL put together a break away that went past the defenders and Kate.  In desperation and out of nowhere, Christina raced back to the mouth of the goal for a last second save to clear the ball from a certain score.  CASL feeling the game slipping away from them kept pouring on the attack. Kate made a spectacular save on dangerous shot from way outside the box to send the ball off her finger tips just over the top of the goal. Jesse and Lexi kept the offensive threat alive for the Flames coming in waves of end to end runs.  Quality looks were few but the Flames kept possesion time in their favor.  Collins recovering from several weeks of injury jumped into the fray and got a nice shot off within the first 30 seconds of being on the field. Eli closed out the game with a powerful punch just wide. Flames record a solid win of 2-0 over CASL Premier.

The Flames are currently in 3rd place in the division. Go Team!

Argh!! Shutouts in Charlotte

The Flames were blanked in both games down in Charlotte falling 2-0 against Charlotte United Gold and again 2-0 against SCSA. Both games were tighter than the shutouts indicated with the Flames making adjustments to keep the games competitive. The Flames had the clear advantage against Charlotte United for most of the first period but gave up a goal after having trouble getting organized after substitutions. The Flames did not give up and had several drives deep with Lexi and Shannon going to the net. A stiff defense by United kept quality shots to a minimum. The second United goal was in heavy traffic that bounced funny off the post just slipping by Kate's well played positioning. Final score 2-0.

The SCSA game got off to a tough start with the Flames finding themselves down 2-0 in the first 7 minutes. Courageously, the Flames did not give up and fought through the remainder of the first period with threatening shots from Eli and Jules. The second was very well played with the edge going to the Flames. Kimberly and Price were a wall at center mid. Alana was brilliant with 3 terrific shots on goal, that had the planets been aligned differently, would have gone in. SCSA mounted threats but solid D by Lauren, Christina, Erin and Cuccaro kept the attackers at bay. A tough loss but offense is emerging.

The ladies are starting to play as a unit and beginning to anticipate each others passes which is needed in the Premier division. Building trust and chemistry takes time. It's tough taking these losses but they are just part of the journey to State Cup. Encountering either of these teams in the State Cup later in the season will surely be an opportunity to show that the Flames have game.

Flames and Lady Twins Tie 0-0 in 2007 Season Opener

Moving up to the premier division is a double edged sword offering prestige and stiff competition but the 91 Flames very ready for the challenge.  The Lady Twins White were a fast and athletic squad with the opening tip being an immediate drive deep to the corner.  Julia broke up the play and started the counter attack. The Flames charged right back with Eli and Melanie driving into the Twins box. Much of the period was battled in the mid-fields with Alana, Jules and Cuccaro making dashes down the sides. The Twins focused on long kicks to the corners with their swift forwards chasing the ball.  This tactic put Erin and Lauren on guard at all times with Christina and Kimberly often providing support.  Lexi and Jules both had rocket shots from just outside the box that were well defended.  Additionally, Eli got off a towering shot that sailed just high due to the wind. Kate was tested several times and showed excellent communication and decision making of when to come out of the goal. Jesse, Aubrey and Pilo provided solid relief as the period wore on and temperature rised.  The first half was fast paced and both teams had even scoring opportunities but remained tied at 0-0.

The Lady Twins came out to play a much more physical game in the second half and the Flames followed their lead.  The advantage was clearly with the Twins but close officiating kept the game in check.  Price and Christina did their best to ward off the attack with Kimberly, Erin and Lauren protecting the outside.  Kate did a fabulous job defending in close quarters with relentless assaults coming in from long throw ins or corner kicks.  Attacks were tough to come by but were mounted by Shannon and Mel who also provided back pressure to harass the attacking Twins.  As the period wound down the Flames recovered some of their confidence and mounted a final drive deep into the Twins box but could not pull the trigger on a shot.  The match ended in a tie of 0-0.  Next up are games in Charlotte on Saturday and Sunday.

Pre-season Sun Cup Tournament

Beach FC Tournament

The preseason Beach FC Sun Cup Tournament offered glimpses of great potential and lackluster desire for the 91 Flames recording a victory and 2 losses. Preseason play allows the coaches to sort out player positions, identify team strengths and weaknesses and to see how well together the individuals play as a unit. Compunding this task of putting a "team" on the field were injured or sick players and the task of integrating 3 new talented players to the team. The coaches and fans got to see a little bit of everything, ranging from spirited to uninspired play.

The first match came up against nationally 5th ranked Vista Shockwave of Virginia that got the early jump on the Flames. The first half found the Flames on their heels giving the defense a good work out with few offensive opportunities. The second half was a different story with the Flames not backing down and winning 50-50 balls. The Flames gave up a goal but showed that they can play with anybody when they want to. Final score 4-0.

Play in the second match was inspired out of the gates. Every Flame was first to the ball against a physical New York team. The Flames dominated play the entire first half putting up more than a dozen quality shots. Hustle was the word and the Flames made New York play their game and were not dragged into a physical battle. No shots found the net in the first half ending at 0-0. More of the same ensued in the second period with the Flames driving deep and shooting. Finally, Lexi fired a laser shot with 4 minutes left to play for the go ahead goal and victory. Great match Ladies!

Perhaps the Flames are not a "morning" team because their collective performance exempting a few players was anemic. Play was uninspired and offensive pressure was only a flicker against a solid Canadian Cougar squad. Both teams seemed evenly matched and the Flames were by no means dominated but the Cougars had the edge finding a shot in traffic in the first half to go up 1-0. Second half play was similar with the Flames generating a little more offense but finding it difficult to break through the Cougar defense. Most play was fought at mid-field with the edge going to the Cougars. With only a few minutes left to play the Cougars broke loose to seal their victory at 2-0. Following the game, Coach Leigh said the girls all know they need conditioning and will work hard over the next 2 weeks in anticipation to the season opener on Sunday, September 9, 12:00 PM at Fleming Loop fields against Winston-Salem.

Flames win squeaker 1 - 0
As was said at the beginning of the season, a win is a win. The Flames were put to the test in the final game of the season against a talented and swift Winston-Sales Lady Twins team. The finale game ended with the Flames winning 1 - 0.

The Flames got on the score board quickly at 2:46 with a shot punched in by Eli. The Flames dominated for the initial 12 minutes of play then the momentum shifted to the Lady Twins with the Flames playing more defense than they were used to. Collins did a great job keeping balls out of the net.

The second half play was a little more spirited by the Flames. Both teams had their chances but play was near even. As the half wound down the Flames did surge with Eli, Jessie, Alana and Callan putting up quality drives to the net. Final score 1 - 0. Final record Undefeated!

Great win Ladies and thanks for the undefeated regular season!

Flames trounce FCCA Red 7 - 0
All games are big games when you are undefeated, especially when you are jockeying for bracket position in the upcoming State Cup tournament. The Flames brought their best against a physical FCCA Red team dominating both periods of play. Poise and constant offensive pressure were the rule of the day with the Flames winning 7 - 0.

Scoring got underway at 8:36 with Jules feeding Jessie for an authoritative shot to go up 1- 0. Mid-fielders played a tight possession game with pin point passes in traffic to keep FCCA out of synch. Brenae did a unique "back of the head" pass finding Melanie crashing to the net at 16:40 to make it 2 - 0. Collins made a couple of easy stops but most threats were thwarted by solid D of Lauren, Christina, Price and Erin. Rarely, did FCCA cross mid-field. At 26:34 a corner kick was served up by Julie into heavy traffic finding Melanie for her second goal bringing the score to 3 - 0. Minutes later Jules made a great pass to Melanie on a one touch pass to Callan for the fourth score at 31:58. The half ended with the Flames up 4 - 0 and the bench getting solid play keeping legs fresh.

Play in the second period was noticeably more physical by a frustrated FCCA club. The Flames poured on the pressure on a Price free kick to Eli at the door scoring at 9:07. Kate relieved Collins in the goal but was hardly tested. Many close scoring opportunities presented themselves with Cuccaro, Collins, Pilo and Alana taking shots and Callan just missing wide on solo breakaways. Melanie then found Julie dropping into the box to go up 6 - 0 at 32:46. As the period came to a close, Christina darted to mid-field on a 50-50 challenge cracking the ball long and into the net for her first score of the season at 38:47.

Great effort ladies! Next up is Winston-Salem Lady Twin.

Flames handle LNSC Red 2 - 0
A poised and maturing Flames squad kept to the game plan to consistently outplay LNSC Red to a 2 - 0 shutout. There were murmurs on the sidelines from parents as to whether the girls were "expecting" an easy victory with the opposing team having a losing record. When the Flames stepped on the field it was clear they came to play but it was equally clear that LNSC Red did also as both teams came out playing a physical match.

First half was dominated by the Flames midfield in concert with the defensive backs, Christina and Price directing pressure. Excellent play up top with tight passes in traffic made for many field changes that had LNSC Red doing a lot of chasing. Center mids, Ely, Alana and Melanie played tough with many take aways feeding forwards. Well into the first period, the Flames had
mounted several quality opportunities but could not find the net. At precisely the 25th minute Pilo fired a shot from left side just outside the box to take the lead 1 - 0. Forwards, Callan, Jessie and Brenae kept LNSC Red scrambling as a result of strong feeds by Julie, Jules and Cuccaro. Collins was not seriously tested as the half expired with Flames in command 1 - 0.

A fired up Flames team took the opening kick straight into LNSC territory with Jessie punching a shot in to go up 2 - 0 at 2:39 into the final period. The Flames continued pouring on offensive pressure with Erin and Lauren getting take aways and then pinching well into offensive territory. Several free kicks caused exciting shot attempts but additional goals were elusive. Julie served up multiple corner kicks that were just missed by crashing forwards of Lexi, Jessie and Callan. A solid effort all the way around to keep the team undefeated and in first place in the division.

Battle of the Undefeated - Flames blank Triangle United - 2 to nil
The Flames opened the season with the core team intact and 3 new players. With each game, teamwork improved, Coach Leigh adjusted and success followed. Meeting a potent Triangle United team mid-season was a fitting way to test the skill and heart of the 91 Flames, as both teams entered the weekend undefeated. The Flames were up to the challenge on an overcast but soccer friendly temperature day in Fuquay Varina and earned a victory(2-0) to become the sole leader in the 1st Division Statewide.

Triangle United Gold(TUG)came to play and brought a fast paced and physical effort out of the gates. The Flames were poised and finessed their way down the field minimizing the physical play of TUG enabling Eli to find the net at 5:18 into the first period from outside the box. The Flames continued pressuring with Jessie and Callan streaking down the sidelines. Rock solid possession oriented mid-field by Melanie, Eli, Alana, Jules and Cuccaro kept TUG at bay with few quality shots on goal. Kate was tested but played smartly communicating with defenders. Late in the period Lexi served up a corner that was headed in by Eli at 33:41 to go up 2-nil. TUG did not back down and physical play continued to end the half.

The Flames opened the second half driving deep right with Callan crossing to Jules shooting just wide to an open net. Pilo immediately followed with a well placed far post tester. TUG was energized and mounted several deep drives and shots. Kate was superb in her decisions of when to come out of the net versus staying put. Erin and Julie provided both defensive and offensive dimensions in the quickly transitioning game. TUG fought hard with speedy and physical play but the Flames kept to their game and worked the passing to spread out play. Both teams had multiple corner opportunities which proved exciting with each team scrambling in frenzied kick-header-kick-header sequences. Christina and Price worked center "D" against several spirited TUG forwards but readily diffused any momentum shifts. A solid bench and high energy play by Brenae and Collins contributed to a complete effort by the team. Way to go Ladies!

Flames catch Wave 3 - 0
A tough battle was anticipated and the match didn't disappoint while the Flames pulled out a solid victory ( 3- 0) against a strong Cape Fear team. The beach in October always provides for optimal soccer weather and cooperated in delivering a quality game by both teams. The first half was even with most possesions being played in each others midfield. Deep drives were infrequent with few quality scoring opportunities. Lax officiating made play physical and "elbowy" but was fairly called. The Flames bench was rotated smartly to keep players fresh which would prove wise for the second half. Flames defenders, Price, Lauren, Erin, Christina and Julie communicated and played solidly against tall and fast Forwards. Score tied at 0 - 0 at end of first period.

The Flames came out with a purpose in the second half with agressive drives deep into Wave territory. One touch passes were pinpoint and worked to run the Wave ragged. Bench rotation kept the pressure squarley on Wave defenders. Midway through the period, the Flames earned a corner kick. Alana stepped up and "bent" in a towering shot that dropped into the net just over the finger tips of the Wave goalie to go up 1 - 0. Minutes later, a PK was called against the Wave and Alana was called upon to make the kick ten yards outside the box to find the net untouched to go up 2 - 0. With 10 minutes left to play the Flames did not let up. Lexi cracked in the back breaker goal from right midfield to go up 3 - 0. An exhausted Wave did not relent but neither did Flames let up. Collins just missed a header by inches and Williams saw a shot just tipped over the top of the goal. Great work ladies!

Tuesday, October 3
Flames dominate Johnston United 5 - 1
Coming off a shooting barrage with minimal results, the previous week, the Flames found the first score at 2:39 into the match against Johnston United Pride. The Flames looked razor sharp dominating play and tested the Johnston goalie relentlessly. There was a notable lull in the effort midway through the first period but a solid bench rallied to finish the half at 2-0 on scores by Eli and Callan.

Second half play was rock solid with the Flames passing and picking apart the competition. Midfielders provided excellent defense when needed but were responsible for serving up streaking forwards. Steady bench relief kept fresh legs on the field and the Flames on the offense. United did get a bouncing PK into the net but was otherwise shutdown. Callan, Jessie and Collins all contributed goals in the second to seal the victory at 5-1.

Tuesday, September 25
Flames outlast Lady Cobras and win 1 - 0
Ping, ping, ping and ping went the ball off the crossbars. The Flames put up more shots against the Lady Cobras in a single game than they did all of last season. Only one shot by Rachel Collins mattered though, with the Flames winning 1-0 in a scrappy battle in Boiling Springs, NC. First half play was well played by both squads. The Cobras goalie was tested early and often but was skilled and responded to the challenges. Shots by Melanie, Jessie, Pilo, Lexi and Jules were fired accurately but could not convert. The Cobras had a couple of strong forwards but Price, Erin, Lauren and Christina denied any quality looks. Kate touched a few balls in the goal but was never tested.

Second half had the Flames dominating play with the Cobras rarely crossing mid-field. With the wind at our backs, shots traveled longer and faster and were plentiful. Several corner shots were earned and served up by Alana and Lexi that resulted in headers and acrobatic kicks that pinged off posts or just wide. While the shooting exhibition was entertaining to watch the fact remained that it was a tie game and anybodys' game. With less than 2 minutes left Collins netted the ball to give the Flames their 3rd victory.

Tuesday, September 25
Flames defeat SCSA Blue 4 - 0
Team work and a deep bench worked to defeat a solid SCSA team. The game was fast paced, physical and fairly called. Jessie scored first with a drive deep down the left side hitting the far post that was indefensible. Defense was rock solid rarely giving SCSA a chance to shoot. Flames Midfielders were challenged with quick physical play but were up to the challenge. Rachel Collins scored near the close of the first half with the Flames up 2-nil.

With a deep drive starting the second half Aynsley found a goal in heavy traffic. The Flames worked their bench keeping players legs fresh and tiring out SCSA with nice one touch passes constantly changing fields. Rachel Cuccaro playing defense and midfielder went down hard with a knee injury. With constant pressure on the attack Alexi broke through SCSA defenders and punched in the fourth goal to seal a shut out victory of 4-0.

Victory in Season Opener - Flames vs. NBSA 1 - 0
Season openers are always a challenge for coaches, players and parents. Positions need to be sorted out and players need to anticipate each others moves. The New Bern squad was in the same boat as the Flames and neither team shined in the match. Fortunately, Pilo fired a shot that was difficult to handle and it went in. The Flames had multiple series of passing that picked apart New Bern mixed with flat periods where they were definitely second to the ball. All in all, a good start that resulted in a victory at the season opener.

Flames Prevail to Victory in State Cup Prelims
The Flames didn't have an easy road to the State Cup. Regular season match play was a trying experience for the team, with only 2 games played with a full roster. Injuries ravaged the team all season including the play-in game for State Cup. Saturday's game against Charlotte Blue was a tough loss despite controlling the entire first half and most of the second. With the game tied at 1-1 and 20 minutes on the clock inevitable fatigue set in. Playing with a sick player, without a player due to a death in the family and 2 other players just plain AWOL, the Flames just ran out of gas against a deep Charlotte Blue squad falling 4-1.

Sunday's game in torrential rain was a testimony of the teams' athletic abilities and character. Winning 3-2 against SCSA Gold, a Charlotte Premier bracketed team was quite an achievement.

The Flames scored early in the first period with Pilo finding the net on superb passing up the field by Lauren and Julia.    SCSA Gold fought back to tie. Collins was tested many times with deep corner drives by speedy forwards. Price and fellow defenders provided a shield that kept quality shots to a minimum.

Second period opened in pouring rain with SCSA scoring early to go up 2-1. The Flames fought back and scored on a deflected shot launched deep by Christina to tie the game at 2-2. Just when you thought it couldn't rain any harder it did. The Flames poured the pressure on up top with Brenae, Lexie and Aynsley launching shots. Melanie and Eli fought in the trenches controlling the mid-field. Fighting off remnants of a fever Alana came off the bench to get the victory score with less than 30 seconds on the clock. Charlotte made one last stand as time ran out. Flames win 3-2.

Next up is HFC Ladies Red on Saturday at 4:00PM in Charlotte. With a win the Flames could get a Wild Card birth in next round.

Flames Sweep in Cyclone Rematch
Same teams, different field, same results as Flames defeat the Swansboro Cyclones 2-1 in a non-counting rematch. The Flames showed superb capabilities driving to the net as they did in the previous match against the Cyclones, launching a battery of shots while deep in Cyclone territory. First half play was entirely in the Cyclone box but finishing to the goal was not in the cards for the Flames. In a sinking "It's Deja Vu all over again" feeling the Flames put up over 20 shots on goal with no score. Aynsley started in the goal and mostly watched her team mates from a far as they passed, dribbled and crossed at will. Then, in one of their few strides past mid-field the Cyclones got a shot off which found the goal to go up 1-0 as the first half came to a close.

After a "pep" talk by the coach the Flames came on the field charged up to begin the second half. Starting down the right side, Christina passed to Alana on a break away to punch the ball into the far corner to tie the match up at 1-1. Playing a more deliberate shooting game, the Flames worked the ball around the field and took fewer but higher quality shots but still could not find the net. Multiple corner kick attempts were well executed and exciting to watch until they didn't go in. Late in the half, Callan broke deep left and got leveled by a Cyclone defender. Price was called upon for taking the PK and delivered a picture perfect shot far high corner that was indefensible to go up 2-1. The Cyclones mounted a last minute drive that was assuredly stopped by Collins to seal the victory.

Flames stare down Fear (0-0)
A magnificent warm and breezy early spring Sunday afternoon at the beach served as the background for a competitive game against a physical Cape Fear White squad. The wind had quieted down significantly from the previous day against Swansboro and expectations were high with the Flames showing rapidly developing teamwork. The Flames dominated the first half without a score and played tough but even for the second half to settle for a tie of ( 0 – 0). Overall, a great weekend of soccer and fun while picking up 4 points in the standings.

Opening kick off went to the Flames with a lightning fast charge to the Fear goal and a shot that woke up the goalie. The Fear couldn’t clear and Jules drew a foul with Price taking a PK just wide right. Off the goal kick, Cuccaro, playing tenacious mid-field sent the ball to Callan running to the corner threatening with a cross. No shot but plenty of action in front of the net. A full 8 minutes of Flames pressure passed before Fear was able to cross mid-field. A series of end to end marches by both teams kept the play exciting. Alana went down with a knee injury and Jules came in with a scrappy effort serving the ball up to Callan and Brenae both taking shots challenging the Fear goalie.

At the 25 minute mark, the Flames had 2 quality corner kicks that were well defended by an astute Fear defensive unit. In a push by Fear, Ally, Erin and Price kept Fear on the outer perimeter outside the box. The half ended tied 0-0.

Second half opened up with both teams aggressively going to net. There was lots of action around the boxes but defenders kept real threats to a minimum. Early in the period the Flames made excellent use of the field spreading play out with great passing. A determined Fear team would not buckle under attack. Play ping ponged between the boxes for many minutes. Tenacious "D" by Ally fought off dual attackers and then cleared the ball deep. A late drive by the Flames threatened, starting with a corner kick and then a pass by Anna to Brenae just kicking high. A follow up give & go with Anna and Christina driving deep right was crossed and the cleared by Fear. In the final minute, Fear marched end to end with a cross and a shot on goal which was denied by Collins to seal a tie of 0 - 0.

Flames Close out Season against CASL Elite and Cape Fear
Late October in North Carolina often provides exceptional Soccer weather, this weekend (10/23-24) was no exception. The Flames faced tough competition meeting the CASL Elite team on Saturday followed by a perennially tough Cape Fear squad on Sunday.

Saturdays match was supercharged with an athletically loaded Elite roster. The game was quick paced that exploited both teams athleticism. The Flames were up for the challenge and fought hard against a relentless offensive effort. The entire team participated in defending and then countering with quick break offensive stands that proved challenging against a one touch Elite team. Play was even until a well served cross by Elite created a crashing opportunity that was a picture perfect score. The half concluded with the Flames behind 0-1.

The second half was a series of exchanges with both teams threatening. Play was clean and well officiated. Elite had a definitive edge on offense threats but the Flames would not surrender. Late in the second half the Flames were called for a penalty deep in their territory that resulted in a PK outside the box. A well placed kick bounced off multiple Flame and Elite players and eventually found the goal in a riot of kicks, headers and body blocks. The game ended shortly there after with CASL Elite winning 2-0.

Cape Fear Wave ushered into Fuquay Varina on a brisk afternoon, that, while overcast and breezy offered another fantastic day for Classic soccer. In summary, the game was a great display of sportsmanship, officiating and athleticism by both teams.
The Flames were consistently challenged on putting an offensive threat against a responsive defense by the Wave. Cape Fear had many shots in the first half but they were easily handled with few truly threatening. The Flames drove deep down the side lines, launching shots yet few were quality pops. The first half ended scoreless.

Both teams started aggressively in the second half. The Flames were "Granite" solid on defense and midfield positions. A stingy Cape Fear defensive effort kept the Flames forwards mostly stymied. The Flames mounted several deep corner breakaways with a rigorous response by the Wave. Quality shots were hard to find for both teams but neither relented. Spirits were high and the officiating kept play consistent. Each team applied offensive pressure but rock solid defensive efforts on both sides, kept all scoring attempts in check. Final score 0-0.

Next up for the Flames is the CASL Shoot Out tournament on the weekend of November 6 & 7 at Middle Creek. Check the website for details and thanks to Walt Dunn for keeping our website current.

Flames Rage and Cyclones Spin to a 1-1 Tie
The Flames opened with an immediate drive to the net executing a rocket shot on goal by Pilo. After a clear by the Cyclones, a breakaway was mounted by Eli up the side. EmilyD was served with a shot on goal with Anna and Erin playing a tough defensive counter when the Cylones attempted to clear. Britny and EmilyR came off the bench to keep the pressure on. Lot's of shots but no goals.

Ally beat double coverage down the right side line to threaten again. This led to a quick break with Jules feeding EmilyD powering a hard shot on goal. Solid goal tending by the Cyclones thwarted a continuous flow of shots by the Flames. The Cyclones had sporatic charges passed midfield but could not get organized to make a shot on goal. Lauren stepped up at midfield with a beautiful feed deep to EmilyD. Ashley and Brenae swarmed yet the Cyclone goalie made a great catch to deny the goal. Continuing the assault, Jules served several shots but again the Flames could not convert.

Out of nowhere, the Cyclones broke deep into Flames territory forcing Rachel to come out of the net. The shot wiggled
through the defense but Lauren followed up with a tremendous body block to short circuit the effort. An ensuing corner kick soared high and ricocheted into the Flames net with 10 seconds in the half. The first period ended with a Cyclone lead of 1-0.

A highly motivated Flames squad came out shooting in the second half. In heavy traffic, Christina fed Pilo for a punch
into the Cyclones goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Flames spent almost the entire second half in the Cyclones end of the field. Price responded solidly sending back any ball that happened to eke into Flames territory. Additionally, Erin kept serving the ball into the Cyclone backfield but Britny, Brenea, Eli, both Emilys' and Pilo could not convert.

As the game wound down, the Flames would not yield and came charging back. They missed a PK opportunity served up perfectly by Pilo but could not buy a goal. In the final moments, Christina fought off double coverage down the right side and launched a cross to awaiting Flames forwards. In heavy traffic the ball passed across the goal untouched resulting in a tie of 1-1. The Flames had 29 shots on goal versus 4 for the Cyclones.

Jammers tough out win against Flames 2-1

Game captains Eli and Price won the toss and elected to have the Jamestown Jammers kick off.  A missed Jammer pass had the Flames drive immediately to net to set the tempo of the match.  The Jammers hammered back with a rapid break away that tested Rachel early on.  EmilyR and Britny drove down the left side crossing to Eli and then to Hannah but shots on goal were elusive.

Fuquay kept the ball down in the Jamestown zone and served up crosses by Christina and Eli.  In an increasingly physical match, the officiating team let players escalate their bumping.  The Flames blanketed the Jammers zone with sendins by EmilyD, Jules and Brenae as they came off the bench to spark a flurry of shots. Jamestown and Fuquay split end to end breakaways but neither team could put up a quality shot.

At this point the aggressive Jammers had the advantage on 50-50s'.  Ally and Lauren were stepping to the ball on defense to keep the Jammers off balance.  Near the end of first half play, the physical nature of play ratcheted up a notch and was encouraged by the officiating as evidenced by their lack of calls on breaches of both teams.

In a Jammer breakaway, Price showed she could shift gears and run down any threat.  Ashley and Christina drove down deep left crossing to Brenae and Eli.  Erin played tightly against a slippery #21 Jammer.  The Flames mounted a threat with pinpoint passes from Price to Christina to Jules setting up a corner opportunity.   The Jammers raced back firing away with a save by Rachel to end the half scoreless.

Jamestown opened the half with a drive to the Flames box into a thrashing mass of players.  The confusing ping pong match ended when the Jammers popped a shot in to go up 1 to nil.  The Flames charged back with crosses by EmilyD and Pilo.  Two corner kicks ensued and shots by Price and Jules just missed.  Dominating the next 10 minutes of play, the Flames could not muster a cohesive attack.  Gritty play by Erin and Brenae kept the Jammers in check.

The Flames pounded away with shots by Britny, Price and Jules.  Increasingly tough play by the Jammers kept Fuquay from getting off quality shots inside.  Despite 4 well placed corners, and many potent follow on shots, nothing could find the net.  Following a broken up Jamestown drive the Flames set forth a rapid thrust into Jammer territory with Britny feeding Jules for a score.  Game tied at 1-1.

The Jammers responded with a breakaway that was cleanly broken up by Jules.  Play continued for at least 20 seconds past midfield when the referee stopped play due to a downed Jammer player.  Happily, she walked off the field.  Surprisingly, the referee called a PK against the Flames.  Rachel fielded the ball handily and a rifle shot on goal was denied.  The Flames continued their attack deep into Jamestown territory.

Per timers kept on the sideline, the game extended well past regulation.  On a breakaway, the Jammers pushed deep into the Flames box and scrambled multiple shots against a downed goalie.  Despite, a linesman signaling off sides, a goal was tallied by the Jammers and officially recorded.  Time continued.  Mounting a final stand the Flames threatened in heavy traffic but were called offside as time ran out.  Final score Jamestown 2, Flames 1.

Editorial Comment:  The officials must limit the aggressiveness of play and call fouls early on.  Without early intervention to keep play consistent to the rules of the game, players are highly at risk to serious injury. As evidenced by the Flames game against TFC the previous week, two TFC players suffered significant injuries that could have been averted if the referees had acted early to set the tone of the game. The FVAA office will be alerted to this potentially dangerous situation.

FVAA Presidential Tournament Synopsis
The 91 Flames played gallantly in the tourney. Field conditions and weather served up a challenging environment along with a top shelf list of teams in the Flames' bracket. Saturday proved to be a "good" weather day compared to Sunday's cold rain, sleet and hail. The FVAA Site Managers' and assistants imported sand and field grooming labor to keep the fields safe for play.

The Flames first opponent was a visiting team from Greenville, SC. In a gritty physical match, the Flames proved their resolve in scoring first and then maintaining pressure offensively. Midfield and defensive efforts provided a solid assurance of victory winning 2 to nil.

The second game was against a well tuned CASL Elite squad. Elite got off to a quick lead and forced the Flames to adapt their game plan to accomodate several injured players with limited mobility. Despite creative player rotations the Flames were simply outplayed and suffered a 6-0 loss.

In the third match, against Cape Fear, the Flames were not awake for the entire first half. They fell behind 2-0 and were completely dominated. Whatever the half-time pep talk was, it worked. The Flames came roaring back to tie the game and then take the lead late in the 2nd period. Cape Fear responded and tied the game in regulation. Since this was a semi-final match, overtime ensued.

Two five minute OT sudden death periods could not produce a winner so the winner was decided on PKs. In a heart breaker, the Flames conceded the match in PKs. Cape Fear went on to lose to CASL Elite 5-2.
