2007/2008 Crossfire Premier G91 S.Crum Summary:
2008 US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships
April/May 2008:
Thursday, May 24 Washington State Youth Soccer Association Moves Girls Club Play to the Spring Season
For years, many individuals within WSYSA and the greater soccer community recognized heightening demands on young athletes time and energy due to increased academic, social, and athletic involvement. Though not limited to women, these increasing demands are especially challenging to female athletes playing high school and club soccer as their seasons overlapped during the fall. As the number of injuries increased and overall player count decreased for female athletes especially in this age group, WSYSA re-evaluated its year-round soccer calendar and made this significant decision in an effort to adhere to its overall mission to foster the growth and well-being of its athletes. The move to this new time of year will impact girls playing soccer throughout the state. For players, the move to a spring season will bring with it many positive benefits including fewer conflicting obligations with high school soccer and other sports, a lower number of injuries due to over-exertion, and improved focus on training during each season. As with any far-reaching change, we understand this new format may pose challenges and cause initial frustration among those involved, stated Todd McGann, WSYSA Executive Director. WSYSA made this decision with thoughtful consideration of the membership, believing that the benefit to the players overall physical, emotional and mental stress would ultimately outweigh these difficulties. It is the mission of this association to foster the development of the State of Washingtons youth through the sport of soccer and we feel this decision is a good step forward in achieving that goal. The change to the spring season is effective immediately and will consist of a schedule beginning the first weekend in February and ending in April, 2008. Additionally, the Challenge Cup and Championship Cup dates for Girls U15-U19 and Boys U19 will move to April and May, respectively. As such, teams winning the State Cup will be better prepared to compete at the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships held in June. To ensure a successful program for the players and teams affected by this change, the new format will be evaluated by the WSYSA Board of Directors according to set objectives at the conclusion of the 2008 season. For additional information, please contact Doug Andreassen, President, at statepresident@wsysa.com or Todd McGann, Executive Director, Todd@wsysa.com About Washington State Youth Soccer Association (WSYSA) Washington State Youth Soccer Association is the largest youth soccer organization in Washington. Monday, June 4 Crossfire Premier '91 Crum secures Division 3 in weekend #1.
With focus and determination, they displayed their team unity on and off the field, and played with control and composure throughout the weekend, unwavered by the high temps. Saturday they began with 3-0, and 4-1 wins. Another 3-1 win Sunday morning put them into the final game scenario vs. Whatcom Rangers Gold w/ the winner advancing to Division 3. The 3-1 win over Whatcom locked up one of the two Division 3 spots available on the first weekend for the team. The other 2 remaining spots will be decided next weekend in the final games of the League Placement Tournament, along with the 8 WSDL positions. 28 teams were entered and competing for the 12 positions available at the premier playing level. Their first round bracket drew competition from the GU16 Frankfurt Warriors, GU16 Spains Oiartzunke KE, and GU16 New Jersey Freedom. They advanced to the Quarter Finals to play the Belgica Girls from Belgium. The girls also enjoyed time in Madrid, Barcelona, Toledo, Zarautz and Biarritz, South France. Tuesday, July 10 Ten Game Spring Season Set For Washington Youth Soccer Girls Over Age 15 FEDERAL WAY, WASHINGTON Two months after the Washington State Youth Soccer Association (WSYSA)s Board of Directors unanimously approved to move the girls state league season from fall to spring, a ten game season has been set for the upcoming 2008 season. This new format and season will take place from February through April and impact approximately 2,000 female players participating in the Washington State Premier League (WSPL) and Washington State Youth Development League (WSYDL), at the Under-15 through Under-19 age group levels. To ensure the correct seeding for State Cups and determine relegation implications for WSPL, each team will be required to play every team once. After week seven, the top four teams and bottom four teams from each division will be grouped together for the remaining three seasonal games. The final league results will provide both the top two teams for State Cup seeding and the bottom two teams for potential relegation. As this new league format unfolds, WSYSA is conscious of the fact that field availability is always a challenge. Internal discussions are already underway with the goal of scheduling even distribution of home and away games for each team if possible. With this new format and timeframe in place, results of the season will have an immediate impact on WSYSAs State Cup which begins only a week after the spring season ends. The reciprocal impact on the State Cup will be evident as the bottom two teams from a division and top two teams of a lower division will be paired against one another. After playing each team once, the two top teams will not only move forward in the tournament, but will also advance to the upper division during the next spring season. Subsequently, any team choosing not to participate in the State Cup would relegate their standing in the following spring season. WSYSA understands that this new format and change will be an adjustment, said WSYSA Executive Director Todd McGann, but we as an Association are making a concerted effort to provide our players with an environment that provides them the opportunity to play at their highest competitive level within a condensed season, while taking into consideration the other outside obligations these kids are faced with. We want our players and programs to be successful both here at home and abroad; this format and change in season will help them do just that. Prior to the decision to establish a ten game season, WSYSA entertained the idea of a fourteen game season. After a comprehensive review, WSYSA agreed that the stress from an additional month of play, the necessity of holding back-to-back games, and the lack of game re-scheduling options under this format, was not in the best interests of the players or program. The choice to implement a ten game season versus a fourteen game format was definitely taken into thoughtful consideration by the WSYSA leadership, stated Dave Schumacher, WSYSA Coaching Director. We solicited input from various sources, including other Directors of Coaching in the soccer community, and with strong endorsement all the way around, felt this course was the best way to both support our players and continue strengthening the womens game in Washington. Crum team spends off time - on the Indoor Turf.
Players from the Crossfire Premier '91 Crum team spent some of their time off on the indoor courts over the holiday. They first played in the Candy Cane Challenge Indoor Tournament at Stafire Sports having fun challenging two older Dosveedanya '88 teams and playing an extra non-counting game. They missed playing in the Finals after a tie breaker excluded them from moving on. The following week they participated in the First Annual Crossfire-Arena Sports Holiday Indoor Tournament at Magnuson Park. Again, they were the team chosen to play a 4th non-counting game. They were undefeated for 5 games in the 4 hours of play. They won the Championship game in a shootout after golden goal overtimes still resulted in a tie against a talented Dosveedanya '90 team. The team wants to thank Corinne for joining them on short notice and wish Chloe the best of luck in getting back on the field as soon as possible -- Chloe sustained a bad ankle injury in the final game at Magnuson Park.
Crossfire Crum return from Las Vegas as Champions with the "CUP"
In preparation for the upcoming Spring Season League, Crossfire '91 Crum traveled to Las Vegas, NV to compete in the 2008 Vegas Cup Tournament over the MLK -3 day weekend. It was a fast and furious weekend with the team playing games in crisp clear sun filled days and chilly nights under the lights. The team captured 4 wins to move on to the finals with a total of 5 games over the 3 days. They met teams from Utah and Colorado and faced a very strong Celtics Premier team again in the finals which resulted in a 0-0 tie. The match concluded in PK's with Crossfire advancing as Champions. There were 13 goals scored with only 1 against and 4 shutouts over the 5 games. FC Las Vegas (formerly Rebels Select Soccer Club) was host to the 2008 Vegas Cup, held at the Betty Wilson Soccer Complex. Bettye Wilson fields were host to the 2007 USYSA Region IV Regional Championships. In their 5th year, the 2008 Vegas Cup the tournament brought teams together from Southern & Northern California, Nevada, New Jersey, Colorado, Illinois, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Arizona, & Texas. The Crossfire Crum team found the tournament well run, providing 70 minute games for U15 and above, with all finals being full regulation time with proper time and space to warm-up on the field before the games. In addition, they were provided benches, water, gatorade, and ice if needed during their competitions. Exceptional refereeing was noted along with some good competition. Crossfire Crum opens the league season at home with a match vs. FC Marauders '91 White on Sunday, February 3rd.
