The Phillie Midgets captured Gold at the Smittys Early Bird Tournament for the 2nd consecutive year, going 4-1 enroute to the win. The Phillies dropped the opener to the Smittys Bantams 2-1, but the rust slowly wore off and the Midgets improved each game and won the next four.

The South Interlake Phillies Midgets are pleased to announce the 1st two College signings of players for the Fall of 2011. Following in the footsteps of Midget Phillie, Stacey Braun, who is attending North Dakota State College of Sciences in Wahpeton North Dakota on a softball scholarship, Sam Anderson and Morgan Dyregrov of the Phillie Midgets are both headed for US Colleges with softball scholarships in hand. Anderson, a speedy outfielder who can hit with power, has agreed to terms with Galveston College, in Texas, and Dyregrov, an infielder who has power in her bat and a strong arm is going to attend Valley City State University in North Dakota. Galveston is a NJCAA Division I College and Valley City is a NAIA College. Both players are ecstatic about the opportunity and look forward to attending in the fall. Congratulations Girls!!!!

After a missed flight and some weather delays the Phillie Midgets finally met with the Head Coach of the University of Central Arkansas, a NCAA Division I University. Coach David Kuhn of the University of Central Arkansas attended a Midget practice on Thursday December 23 and was quite pleased with the level of skill and athleticism that the players displayed. He remarked that the girls were certainly capable of playing at the College level and offered his expertise and advice on getting a softball scholarship. The Phillies would like to thank Coach Kuhn for his time and all the help he provided.

Dreams of getting a scholarship to attend College and play fastpitch just got a whole lot closer for 6 girls from the South Interlake Phillies. Regan Lawrence, Lindsey Dixon, Taylor Studler, Morgan Dyregrov, Sam Anderson, and Bréanne Marcon all attended the City of Lights College Showcase Tournament in Las Vegas Nevada this past weekend as members of the Manitoba Selects. The Selects are an all-star team selected from across the province that practiced and played through the fall in preparation for this showcase event. The Showcase had over 80 College Coaches in attendance looking to recruit talented athletes for their teams. The girls played a total of 5 games over 2 days with their own team and then were split up and combined with other girls to form 24 new teams that worked out and played another 4 games under the direct guidance of College Coaches. On Friday the girls were at the diamond by 7AM for testing which included throwing speed and timed baserunning. The girls were also rated on outfield and infield throws and fielding and individual positional skills. The afternoon saw the Selects play 3 games, which included a come from behind 8-4 win over a Phoenix Arizona team and a 5-1 win over Alta Lomas California. In the final game they lost 8-4 to another Arizona team. Saturday morning the girls broke off into their College coached teams for 2 games and then played 2 more with the Selects in the afternoon. Travel, jet lag, and playing rust took their toll as Manitoba dropped both games in the afternoon, but they did keep them within reach. Saturday night the girls had a break from the diamonds and caught some of Las Vegas night life and sights but were back at the diamond by 7AM. Sunday saw 2 more games with their College coached teams and then some quick goodbyes and off to catch a flight home. The team certainly turned some heads as all girls on the team garnered recognition. In fact one College Coach from Washington was heard to say he would like to take the entire team. Interest was widespread over the US, as College offers and proposals came from Florida to Washington and California to North Dakota. The players were in agreement that the facility was the nicest they had ever played on and the weekend was thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile. Any self doubts that the Phillie girls may have had, were cast aside and they came back with the belief that they can play with anyone and that they truly are capable of competing at the US College level. In fact, a number of the Phillie girls were formally recognized as standout athletes at the tournament and were invited to New York City in July for a “Best of The Best Tournament.” Manitoba Select Coach Wayne Dixon remarked that he believes that the trip was a rewarding experience both for him and the girls and that the communication regarding the recruitment and scholarship process between the College coaches and athletes was excellent. He also said that although the American girls play 150 games per year whereas Manitobans play 60, the quality and caliber of the Phillie organization has prepared Interlake girls with an exemplary program to develop. “Our girls are on par with the Americans.”
