South Interlake Phillies went 5-2 at the 2010 Midget "A" Provincials held July 16-18 at JBSC Softball Complex, which was good enough for SILVER MEDAL at the competition. The competition featured superb pitching from Lindsey Dixon in two 1-0 victories and an exciting extra inning come from behind victory.
Game 1 saw Thunder Midgets and the Phillies face off. After a 3 up 3 down start for Thunder, Kristin McMahon drew a 1 out walk and Taylor Studler singled to put 2 on. Regan Lawrence promptly doubled scoring both giving the Phillies an early 2-0 lead. In the 2nd Dyregrov and Anderson both singled and Dyregrov scored to make it 3-0. Thunder scored in their half of the 3rd to make the score 3-1, but Phillies exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the inning as Braun walked and Lawrence doubled followed by a single from Beckett. Lindsey Dixon then homered and the Phillies led by a 7-1 score. In the 4th Kwasnitza singled and Braun walked followed by a 3rd double from Lawrence and singles from Beckett and Dixon and Phillies win 10-1 on a mercy call. Lawrence fanned 3 and allowed 4 Thunder hits. Phillies countered with 11 hits as Lawrence had 3, Beckett and Dixon added 2 and Kwasnitza, Studler, Dyregrov and Anderson had 1 each.
Game 2 was a matchup between Angels and the Phillies. Both teams pitching was 1st rate and although the teams had opportunities to score they were turned aside. Deadlocked at 0-0 through 7 innings, the Angels started the 8th with a runner at 2nd. A sacbunt moved the runner to 3rd. The next batter hit a shot to Dyregrov at SS who fired a strike to home to retire the runner and Angel's chance. The Phillies came to bat and a bunt and an intentional walk loaded the bases. Taylor Studler then singled to left and the Phillies win 1-0 in a thriller. Dixon allowed 4 hits and fanned 7. Phillies had 6 hits Studler with 2, Lawrence, Beckett, Cowie and Dyregrov with one. Game 3 was the final game for Friday and the Phillies took on Smittys '93. Phillies struck early as Beckett and Studler hit followed by a double from Lawrence that scored 2. In the 2nd Kat Cowie hit a rocket to centre to put Interlake up 3-0. More followed in the 3rd as Lawrence and Dixon singled followed by another dinger from Cowie to make it 6-0. Beckett decided to join in the hit parade and she homered to make it 7-0 in the 4th. In the 5th the Phillies closed the show with a further 3 as Cowie and Dyregrov singled and Kwasnitza walked and all 3 scored to close out the game 11-0 Phillies. Phillies had 13 hits with Cowie and Lawrence getting 3 each and Beckett, Studler, Dyregrov with 2 and Dixon adding one. Lawrence threw a 3 hitter fanning one. Game 4 the Phillies met Smittys '92. Interlake opened with a run in the 1st. The score stayed 1-0 until the 4th when a homerun tied the game. In the 5th 2 bloop singles and a double put Smittys up 3-1 where the score remained. Phillies lose 3-1. Dixon threw a 5 hit game fanning 2. Phillies had 2 hits as Dixon and McMahon had 1 each. Phillies 2nd game Saturday vs Brandon was a dramatic one. Kwasnitza and Studler singled in the 1st and Lawrence doubled to score one. In the 2nd Dyregrov and McMahon singled and both scored on a RBI double from Beckett. Brandon replied with 1 in the bottom of the inningto make it 3-1. In the 5th, 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 errors, led to 4 Brandon runs and a 5-3 lead. The 6th was scoreless and Brandon appeared to have the game in hand with 1 inning to go. In the 7th with 1 out Beckett singled, setting up Taylor Studler's dramatic 2 run homer to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the 8th Dyregrov reached 1st on a fielder's choice where Lawrence dived back into 2nd safely. Kat Cowie then blasted a shot over the centre field fence to put the Phillies up by 3. Brandon scored 1 in their half but that was it and Phillies win 8-6. Kwasnitza, Beckett, Studler, and McMahon had 2 hits each, Lawrence, Dyregrov, and Cowie had 1 each. Lawrence fanned 5 and allowed 4 hits in 6 innings, Dixon fanned 2 and gave up 1 hit in the final 2 innings. Game 6 the Phillies met Lightning. A win would guarantee them a medal, a loss would set up a tie breaker for a medal. Kwasnitza was struck by a pitch as leadoff batter and Beckett bunted safely to leave 2 on. Studler singled to score Kwasnitza and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Although Phillies had baserunners in every inning but the 3rd they could not widen the gap. Lightning struggled with their offence also and failed to mount a big threat. In the 7th Lightning got a runner to 2nd via an error but that was all and Phillies win 1-0. Dixon was sensational as she threw a 4 hitter fanning 6. Phillies had 8 hits with Cowie and Studler getting 2 and Kwasnitza, Beckett, Braun, and Anderson getting 1 each. Guaranteed a medal now, the Phillies met the favoured and undefeated Smittys '91. Game 7vs Smittys '91 the Phillies kept it close through 4 innings as Smittys scored 1 in the 3rd, and Phillies got their 1st 2 batters on in the 4th. Beckett singled and Studler was struck by a pitch. Braun sacrificed to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Lawrence then hit a hard shot to left that was not too deep. The catch was made and the throw to the plate was sure and 3 were out. Smittys scored 4 more in the 5th to lead 5-0 but Phillies managed 2 baserunners in the 6th but again failed to cash them in. There was no further scoring and Smittys win 5-0. Dixon gave up 13 hits and fanned 4. Phillies had 4 hits- Beckett with 2, Studler and Anderson with 1 apiece.
With a record of 5-2 the Phillies take SILVER at 2010 Provincials.
The Phillies would like to thank Hailey Chymy for playing with us at Provincials. You were a great insurance policy. Thank you!!!!!!

The start did not look promising, but after an opening round loss, the Phillie Midgets rebounded with 3 straight victories and then won a nail biter in the final to capture the Smittys Early Bird Tournament. In Game 1 the Phillies dropped a 4-2 decision to Lightning. A 3 run 1st inning was the Phillies undoing as they could never recover. Phillies had 6 hits and 6 walks with Kwasnitza and Dyregrov getting 2 hits each and Lawrence and Studler getting 1 each. Dixon fanned 3 and allowed 5 Lightning hits without walking a batter. Game 2 vs Smitty's 93 became a league game due to the earlier rainout in the week. Phillies took advantage of some early season pitching jitters and cruised to a 9-0 victory in 6 innings. Phillies had 6 hits with Kwasnitza getting 2 and Studler, Dixon, Dyregrov and Cowie getting 1 each. Phillies also had 12 walks and 1 hit batter. Lawrence fanned 6 and gave up 4 hits and no walks. Game 3 the Phillies faced South East Angels. Phillies scored 3 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, and 1 each in the 5th and 7th for the 7-0 shutout. Interlake had 10 hits with Taylor Studler and Kaitlyn Cowie getting 3 each. Studler had 2 triples. Lawrence added 2 hits and Beckett and Braun each had one. Dixon allowed 4 Angel hits and fanned 6 and did not issue a walk. Game 4 saw Smitty's 92 as the opposition. The teams exchanged runs in the 1st inning and in the 3rd Smittys scored 1 but the Phillies came back with 2. Phillies threatened in the 4th, but the scoring was complete and Phillies win 3-2. Hitting for the Phillies were Braun with 3, Studler, Lawrence, Cowie, and Dyregrov with 2, and McMahon and Beckett adding 1. Lawrence allowed 6 hits while fanning 5 with no walks. With a record of 3-1 the Phillies sat in 1st place and met the #2 Smitty's 92 for the gold medal game. Smitty's opened the scoring with 2 in the 2nd, and although the Phillies had baserunners they did not score. Their best chance was in the 4th when Studler tripled to lead off the inning. Two strikeouts and a pop up stranded her and another fine opportunity was squandered. In the 6th, Kwasnitza drew a 1 out walk and Studler singled to put 2 aboard. Beckett came to bat and smashed a 2 strike pitch to deep centre to put the Phillies up 3-2. Dixon slammed the door in the final inning with 3 straight infield outs to preserve the win. . Interlake had 6 hits with Studler getting 3 and Beckett, Dyregrov and McMahon adding one. Dixon fanned 2 and allowed 9 hits with no walks. Phillies take GOLD at the EARLY BIRD
