ANACORTES — Some of youth baseball’s best will be playing in Anacortes this week.
The American Legion Northwest A Regional Tournament will bring together the champions from six states, a Canadian team and the Anacortes host team for a five-day, season-ending tournament beginning Wednesday.
With the exception of the host, each team had to battle its way out of competitive state tournaments for the right to play this week at Volunteer Field.
   A n a c o r t e s A m e r i c a n Legion coach Pat Swapp said the Steamers are looking forward to the tournament.
“They’re really exited about it,” he said. “They know the magnitude of it, with the state champs coming in ... It should be a really good tournament. Every team had to win a state championship, so they had to win some games.”
Chehalis, the Washington champion, will kick off tournament play with a 9:30 a.m. game Wednesday against the Oregon state champion.
Anacortes will face Wyoming’s champion at 7:30 p.m. that evening in the final game of the day in the double-elimination tournament.
Wheatland, the Wyoming champion, also won its state title last season.
“We know they’ll be pretty good,” Swapp said.
The other teams include squads from Idaho, Alaska, Utah and Alberta. Alberta qualified in a tournament with the top teams from Montana and Canada.
The tournament is scheduled to wrap up Sunday.
