  DAY 1 ACTION

Friday, August 17
Idaho wins big over South Anchorage.
Idaho's Bear Lake Bears went on to a convincing win over the South Anchorage Wolverines in late action on day one of the NWCART.  Starting pitcher Cameron Crane pitched four innings of shut-out, no hit, baseball recording three strike-outs and allowing only two walks. His brother, Jordan Crane, came on in relief and earned the save in the 10 run shortened game. The Bears had 19 hits in the game that ended after seven innings, 18-0. Keith Cook had the big stick for the Idaho champs on a night when every starter had at least one hit. Cook was 4 for 6 with three singles, a double and scored two runs.  Bear center fielder Bailey Thomas was 3 for 5 and a had the biggest hit of the game, a triple in the 1st  that drove in two runs.

Friday, August 17
Utah dominates Fairbanks Alaska in game 3.
Box Elder Bees pitcher Rob Garrett pitched six shut-out innings, surrendered just one hit and struck out 11 to earn the win. Utah was up 6-0 when Jason Saunders took over for Garrett in the 7th.  The Fairbanks 49’ers quickly took advantage and scored 3 runs to cut the lead in half.  The Bees, however, were not to be denied and put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 8th by scoring 6 runs.  Utah’s Danny Smith was 3 for 5 at the plate and scored two runs. Teammate Taylor Larson was 2 for 3 with a double, 2 walks and scored 3 runs.  Fairbanks pitcher Mike McAllister started on the mound and pitched into the 7th inning.  He was also 2 for 5 at the plate with a double and scored one run.

Friday, August 17
Washington defeats Wyoming in game 2 of NWCART.
Richland Knights pitcher Cody Shepherd held the Wheatland Lobos in check and led his Washington team to a 5-2 victory over the team from Wyoming. Shepherd gave up 6 hits and struck out 8 while going 2 for 5 at the plate.  His double in the 1st inning drove in the first run of the game.  Fellow teammate Eric Yardley was 2 for 4 with one RBI.  Washington stranded eleven runners during the game while Wyoming stranded seven.

Friday, August 17
Montana takes game 1 against Oregon.
Oregon was cruising with a one run lead in the top of the 6th when the momentum shifted on a key play at the plate. Ashland's Luke Jannusch had led off the inning with a double and reached third on an error by the right fielder.  After Hayden Miller popped out to the first baseman, Danny Meza drove a ball to deep right field where Kyle Brown made the catch and fired the ball to Eric Locke.  Locke quickly relayed the ball to catcher John Rausch who was protecting the plate from Jannusch's attempt to score on the sacrifice fly. Jannusch slid hard but Rausch was a stone wall, catching the throw and making the tag to end the inning. The Mariners then exploded in the bottom of the 6th putting up 8 runs. Tim Rausch led off with a single and stole 2nd base. The Pilots then opted to walk Montana pitcher Brandon "Moose" Thompson who had hit a towering solo home run in his previous at bat in the 4th. The floodgates then opened after Will Gordon reached 1st on a throwing error by the short stop that scored Rausch. A single by Tyler Linse and doubles by Beau Nordberg and Cubby Pierre highlighted the hot bats of the Mariners.  The scoring ended when Brandon Thompson drove in 2 runs with his 2nd at bat of the inning. The Pilots battled back with 3 runs in the top of the 7th and 2 runs in the 9th but fell short by a final score of 10-7. Oregon left 11 runners stranded in the game and Thompson went the distance for Montana recording 10 strikeouts over 9 innings.
