The Hornets finished the weekend with three wins and two losses, both to the eventual champion Southern Maine Flame team, in the double elimination tournament. Game one featured an 11 strikout performance by pitcher Nicole Gubellini against the New England Riptide (Ma). The Hornets stung early with a bases loaded triple by catcher Kate Dawson in the first inning. The Riptide inched back into the game and tied it in the 5th 3-3. In the bottom of the 5th Heather Fyfe blasted a home run just over the right fielders head to score the winning run in the 4-3 victory. The South Shore Stealers (MA) were the Hornets next victim. Kelsey Kennedy drove in two runs with a line drive single in the 3rd, and Allie Bowe drove in another two with a perfect bunt in the 5th. Lauryn Kmon provided 2 solid innings of relief to shut down the Stealers attack 7-5. Sunday morning, Game 3 featured a pithing and defensive gem by both the Hornets and the Southern Maine Flame. Gubellini hurled a 2 hitter, but was outdueled by the Flames Mo Hannan. Gubellini had the hornets only hit in the 1-0 loss. Ashley Abad flashed her leather by converting an unassisted double play on a line drive up the middle. She was on the back end of another DP initiated by Bowe, who made a running catch in center field, and threw to Abad at 2nd to double up the Flames runner. Unfortunately, both of their hits came in the same inning, and they were able to score a run said Hornets coach Bob Bonfiglio. This was the type of game that no one deserved to lose. The Hornets now had to beat the Charlton(MA) Wildfire to get fight their way back into the Chamionship game Sunday afternoon. Fyfe wasted no time, starting the game with a triple, and scoring on a hit by Abad. Kennedy drove in Abad to take a 2-0 lead. Heather Fyfe drove in Casey (wheels) Mellen after she stole 3rd base in the 2nd inning and the Hornets never looked back. Christina Bonfiglio led the defensive front while Gubellini and Kmon shared the pitching duties dowsing the Wildfire in the 8-5 win. The Championship game featured an error free rematch of the Hornets and the Flame. It was a scoreless duel till the 5th inning when the Flame broke it open with 5 runs. Lauryn Kmon provided shut down relief pitching, holding the Flame scoreless the rest of the way. Sami Hennequin led the defense beginning a double play with a running shoestring catch in right field, and finishing it with a strike to 3rd base. In their final at bat, the Hornets mounted a comeback with 2 runs in and runners at 2nd and 3rd, but in the end were shut down 5-2. Flame Coach Derek Volk raved about the two games with the Hornets. I just cannot believe that 22 girls age 11-13 could play 14 innings under that pressure without making a single error. It was amazing! The Hornets play next in Leominster, Ma as the tune up for their trip to the PONY National Championship tournament in Vienna, Ohio July 21-26. Sunday, June 24 12u Bedford Hornets Finish 3rd in States
